Scarlet Ibis; Analysis And Plot.

Initial Situation "Everybody thought he was going to die […]" (3.3). The story opens with Brother remembering the scarlet ibis in the "bleeding tree" (1). This frames the story as a memory. We know that the events Brother describes happened in the past, though we don't know exactly how far back in the past. We also know that the memory is about Doodle, though we don't know what Doodle and the ibis have to do with each other, yet. As we discuss in " Style ", a story with a frame is considered a story within a story. The fact that Brother is remembering something and making it a story uses the style of. What he is remembering is another story. Here we are focusing on the plot structure of that second story, the story in Brother's memory, which begins when Doodle is born, when Brother is six. Baby Doodle is born with some physical problems, though we aren't, initially, given any details on these problems. Most of the family thinks Doodl

Plot

Plot Plot Definition Plot is a literary term used to describe the events that make up a story or the main part of a story. These events relate to each other in a pattern or a sequence. The structure of a novel depends on the organization of events in the plot of the story. Plot is known as the foundation of a novel or story which the characters and settings are built around. It is meant to organize information and events in a logical manner. When writing the plot of a piece of literature, the author has to be careful that it does not dominate the other parts of the story. There are five main elements in a plot; The first is the exposition or the introduction : This is known as the beginning of the story where characters and setting are established. The conflict or main problem is introduced as well . The second is the rising action  :This occurs when a series of events build up to the conflict. The main characters are established when the rising action of a plot occurs and

Writing Style

Style Definition of Style The style in writing can be defined as the way a writer writes and it is the technique which an individual author uses in his writing. It varies from author to author and depends upon one’s syntax, word choice, and tone. It can also be described as a voice that readers listen to when they read the work of a writer. Types of Style There are four basic literary styles used in writing. These styles distinguish the work of different authors from one another. Here are four styles of writing: Expository or Argumentative style Expository writing style is a subject-oriented style . The focus of the writer in this type of writing style is to tell the readers about a specific subject or topic and in the end the author leaves out his own opinion about that topic. Descriptive style In descriptive writing style, the author focuses on describing an event, a character or a place in detail . Sometimes, descriptive writing style is poetic in nature in , where th

Phenomenal Woman:Poem.

Phenomenal Woman By Maya Angelou Pretty women wonder where my secret lies. I'm not cute or built to suit a fashion model's size But when I start to tell them, They think I'm telling lies. I say, It's in the reach of my arms The span of my hips, The stride of my step, The curl of my lips. I'm a woman Phenomenally. Phenomenal woman, That's me. I walk into a room Just as cool as you please, And to a man, The fellows stand or Fall down on their knees. Then they swarm around me, A hive of honey bees. I say, It's the fire in my eyes, And the flash of my teeth, The swing in my waist, And the joy in my feet. I'm a woman Phenomenally. Phenomenal woman, That's me. Men themselves have wondered What they see in me. They try so much But they can't touch My inner mystery. When I try to show them They say they still can't see. I say, It's in the arch of my back, Th

Symbols in Literature

A symbol is a mark, sign, or word that indicates, signifies, or is understood as representing an idea, object, or relationship. Symbols allow people to go beyond what is known or seen by creating linkages between otherwise very different concepts and experiences. Symbolism Symbolism is the practice or art of using an object or a word to represent an abstract idea. An action, person, place, word, or object can all have a symbolic meaning. When an author wants to suggest a certain mood or emotion, he can also use symbolism to hint at it, rather than just blatantly saying it. Symbolism in Literature  Symbolism is often used by writers to enhance their writing. Symbolism can give a literary work more richness and color and can make the meaning of the work deeper. In literature, symbolism can take many forms including: A figure of speech where an object, person, or situation has another meaning other than its literal meaning.  The actions of a character, word, action,

Organic structure

DEFINITION; An Organic Organization is a type of informal organization originally described by British theorists Tom Burns and George Stalker. According to Burns and Stalker, an organic organization is one that is very flexible and is able to adapt well to changes . Its structure is identified as having; little job specialization. few layers of management. decentralized decision-making. not much direct supervision. Burns and Stalker wanted to determine the relationship between an organization's structure and management as they relate to changes in the organization's environment. They developed a continuum of organizational structure where organic organizations are at one end and mechanistic organizations are at the other end. As you might expect, mechanistic organizations demonstrate high complexity, a high degree of formalization, and are highly centralized. An organic structure in an organization depends on its own thus stands dependently, meaning that

Difference between organic structure and mechanistic structure.

Organic and Mechanistic Structures Mechanistic Organic Employees are assigned work separately and specialize Employees are assigned work in groups and work together to tackle a tasks. Arrangement of authority positions are well-defined. Task forces and teams are primary integrating mechanisms. Decision-making kept as high as possible. Most communication is vertical. Authority to control tasks is delegated. Most communication lateral. Extensive use made of rules & Standard Operating Procedures. Face-to-face contact for coordination. Work process tends to be unpredictable. Much written communication. Much verbal communication. Informal status in organization based on size of empire. Informal status based on perceived brilliance. Organization is a network of positions, corresponding to tasks. Typically each person corresponds to one task. Organization is net

Principles of management.Mechanistic Structures.

A mechanistic structure , also known as a bureaucratic structure , describes an organizational structure that is based on a formal, centralized network. The mechanistic structure is best suited for companies that operate in a stable and certain environment. In general, a mechanistic structure is easy to maintain and rarely needs to be changed when an organization operates in a stable environment. In mechanistic organizations, authority reflects a well-defined hierarchy where top-level managers make the majority of the decisions [ thus more centralized ]. Because the environment is relatively stable, complex decision-making processes that involve multiple parties are not required. Subordinates are expected to follow the directions of management and not question their rationale. Communication, much like decisions, also flows through hierarchical routes, or from the top down. Individualized job specialization is used to place employees into designated tasks. In mechanis

PRINCIPLES OF MANAGEMENT.FIVE APPROACHES TO ORGANISATIONAL DESIGN.

Image
Managers must make choices about how to group people together to perform their work. Five common approaches — functional, divisional, matrix, team, and networking—help managers determine departmental groupings (grouping of positions into departments). The five structures are basic organizational structures, which are then adapted to an organization's needs. All five approaches combine varying elements of Mechanistic structures and Organic structures . For example, the organizational design trend today incorporates a minimum of bureaucratic features and displays more features of the organic design with a decentralized authority structure, fewer rules and procedures, and so on. Functional structure The functional structure groups positions into work units based on similar activities, skills, expertise, and resources (see Figure 1 for a functional organizational chart). The Scarlet Ibis

Image
The Scarlet Ibis by James Hurst Summer was dead, but autumn had not yet been born when the ibis came to the bleeding tree. It's strange that all this is so clear to me, now that time has had its way. But sometimes (like right now) I sit in the cool green parlor, and I remember Doodle. Doodle was about the craziest brother a boy ever had. Doodle was born when I was seven and was, from the start, a disappointment. He seemed all head, with a tiny body that was red and shriveled like an old man's. Everybody thought he was going to die. Daddy had the carpenter build a little coffin, and when he was three months old, Mama and Daddy named him William Armstrong. Such a name sounds good only on a tombstone. When he crawled on the rug, he crawled backward, as if he were in reverse and couldn't change gears. This made him look like a doodlebug, so I began calling him 'Doodle.' Renaming my brother was probably the kindest thing I ever did for him, because nobody exp
